Trump has been pressuring Mitch McConnell to change the adjournment date of the US Senate, citing his authority to prorogue both Houses under the Constitution, Article II Section 3 (and I am certain he was told he could do this by someone else).
That section only permits the President to do that if the House and Senate cannot agree on an adjournment date, and Sen. McConnell has insisted the date is the same which Nancy Pelosi agrees to, January 3, 2021.

Even if he was Speaker, and Biden and Harris suddenly died, he could only become president if there was less than two years left on the term. And he couldn’t run again.

OK, only an amateur Constitutional scholar, but isn’t January 3 - as specified by the 20th Amendment - the starting date for the NEW Congress, not the termination (formal “adjournment”) of the old one?
ISTR that Congressional sessions usually end just before NYE (Jan 1 being a formal holiday), and the new lot swear in on 1/3. Though nowadays, who can tell WTF they might do….?

re: #30 jaunte
You are sent a form 1099-C “Forgiveness of Debt” for the tax year it was forgiven from the creditor.
In general, if you have cancellation of debt income because your debt is canceled, forgiven, or discharged for less than the amount you must pay, the amount of the canceled debt is taxable and you must report the canceled debt on your tax return for the year the cancellation occurs. The canceled debt isn’t taxable, however, if the law specifically allows you to exclude it from gross income. These specific exclusions will be discussed later.
There are some exceptions to the requirement to pay taxes.
In general, you must report any taxable amount of a canceled debt as ordinary income from the cancellation of debt [list of forms on which you can report it follows]

NC, WI, MN, IA, MI, AZ, FL, GA, PA

he’s behind on *all* of them ex GA which is a tie today
yes AZ IA and FL are very close
but MN down 10, WI down 7, MI down 9

- no october surprise

The XX Amendment says that members are elected from March 4 to January 3. It doesn’t speak of when Congress is adjourned.
The reason Trump wants this is so he can make recess appointments.

There are a lot of really neat little curlicues on 538. My favorite is the square-ish picture link to the forecast in the top right of the front page. fivethirtyeight.com
You’ll see it’s a a grid (not quite a square, I think it’s 18x22?) of red dots filling in from the left, and blue dots filling in from the right. These correspond directly to the forecast odds, and oddly enough provide the most fine-grained (each dot is about .25%) indicator on the site. You can see right there moment to moment what is happening. Right now there are six blue dots in the third column from the left - the best I’ve seen was seven when I looked early this afternoon. Even as the numbers sagged a little this weekend (and most of that is just a point or two of undecideds coming back to Trump) it was only down to 3 dots.
The thing I don’t like about Nate’s model is I think his simulations go too far off of the median results - if you look at the example outcomes on both sides, they’re just silly. (Colorado red? Kansas blue? Not worth considering.) But the end numbers are usually relatively fair because you’re trimming roughly proportional parts off both sides. When it gets to this stage, where Trump barely has anything left but the crazy scenarios, I think it overestimates his chances. See Wang with 99%+ Biden or Economist with 95%+ Biden. There are still benefits of doing it Nate’s way, but for honest prediction it’s a little iffy.

You wouldn’t get this break if you were a Muslim or an atheist.
I left out part of that:
During yesterday’s hearing, Dave Daubenmire asked Marcelain to give his son a chance.
“I believe Zach has been greatly punished because of his association with me,” the father said. “I really believe in my heart that this case can be an example” of positive change by his son.
Marcelain seemed moved by the sentiments expressed by the father and son, as well as nearly 100 letters of support sent to him by people who know the younger Daubenmire and his family.
“I can see no purpose of incarceration,” Marcelain said. “I don’t know about your redemption. That’s handled by a different court.”

Recess appointments? Aren’t they only valid until said “recess” is over?
And (most of them??) expire with a new Congress anyway?
